This article describes the differing roles and domains of Middle Eastern men and women and includes comments regarding the meeting of these roles and the prospect of changes. Women are said to conduct their lives around two major considerations: the home, and the private communication patterns between women of several homes. For all internal purposes the home is the wife's, and her authority in domestic affairs is an established fact. Men are concerned with the sphere of earning a living (insofar as this occurs outside the home) and the public sphere of communications, including public affairs. Externally the home is the husband's. Arrangements surrounding a marriage (a public affair), the patrilineal and patrilocal principles governing social (kinship) structure, and the geographical dislocation of people attest to the man's appearance of total control of the home both internally and ex
