In this chapter, Bagley discusses in depth the Iranian Family Protection Law including Article 1.24. He notes that the ruling lifestyle of Middle Eastern societies has been characterized by male superiority and that the female role traditionally has been to serve her husband and sometimes to share him with others, as males had a legal right to four wives and a number of temporary wives. Current generations, however, have witnessed a movement for women's rights and equality in Iran, The first breakthrough was the introduction of women's education, followed by removal of the chador, and, lastly, the Family Protection Law. Bagley explains that decrees of the law prevent polygamy, establish certain restrictions for divorce, and provide for examination by the District Courts of all civil cases arising over matrimonial matters and all family disputes.
