In this chapter Cooper describes the many aspects of marriage, divorce, polygamy, and funeral customs of the Egyptians, including the Koranic principles involved. She discusses the traditional wedding ceremonial customs, e.g., who pays for what and the forms of entertainment. An explanation of a few divorce procedures, which vary among different sects, reveals some of the inequalities of divorce (i.e., women must remain single for three months, whereas the man may marry immediately) and what happens to the children under differing circumstances. Cooper also discusses women's duties, the higher religious and superstitious nature of the women in comparison to men, and the relative ignorance of sanitation. Lastly, she details funeral customs and beliefs on death. (From:? Women in the Middle East and North Africa:? An Annotated Bibliography? by Ayad Al-Qazzaz.? Austin, TX: Center for the Mid
