This book references to palace intrigue, details of male and female dress including commentary on the incorporation of Western fashions, summaries of female education, explanations of the social structure of the imperial harem and how this fitted into the workings of the Ottoman state apparatus, details of the characters and shifting reputations of leading politicians and military men, character sketches and evaluations of elite and imperial women, attention to the power available to palace servants, slaves, and eunuchs, and so on. And all this rendered with a dash of whimsy and clear understanding of the preoccupations of the Western reader, whose assumptions are reinforced and challenged in turn. (From: Lewis, Reina. "'Oriental' Femininity as Cultural Commodity"ed. Hackforth-Jones, Jocelyn, and Roberts, Mary. Edges of Empire: Orientalism and Visual Culture, Blackwell Publishing, 108.)
