Alex currently\rworks from home running a business he started a few years ago with two of his friends. He dropped out of school to run his business, but is planning on returning back to Brigham Young University in Provo to study finance. He has lived abroad in London and in South Africa.

When I interviewed Alex he was sitting in my apartment on my couch. He came over to drop a few items off for me for Valentine's day, which was very nice of him. Alex is a very nice guy, among other things. It was very warm outside which was unusual for the time of year, but enjoyable nonetheless. I decided to interview Alex because he had some really interesting stories from his time being a freshman at Brigham Young University.

Because Brigham Young University (BYU) is funded by the Latter-Day Saint (LDS) church, the school is populated almost entirely by members of the church. The school has required classes that are\rbased around religious studies, and an "Honor Code" with a particular set of standards for grooming, dress, and behavior that required to be complied with to attend the university. Many of the activities that happen on campus are centered around the LDS church. For example, there is an "Education in Zion" exhibit permanently on display in the main building of the humanities on campus, the JFSB. Students largely attend church services within campus buildings and classrooms. To attend the university, students must have a "ecclesiastical endorsement" from a religious leader of a Mormon congregation formally called a "bishop." BYU, like many other American universities, has dorm halls specifically built to house first-year students attending the university. The buildings are all named differently, and each student is organized into a hall. There are three floors to each dorm building, and the buildings are separated by gender. Helaman Halls is the name of the collection\rof dorm buildings, both male and female. DI stands for Deseret Industries and is a local thrift store. Meryl Hall is the dorm building Alex lived in when he was a freshman.

I recorded Alex using an app on my phone and I am transcribing the recording here. \r"Ok so, we had a couple of games we would play, one of which had a slightly profane name I will not repeat here. (Laughter). But, the game involved a golf club that came from DI, that I honestly think came from WWII era Germany because it had a golden eagle and some other kind of, almost, Nazi symbols on it. So we took the golf club and in the narrow long hallways of the dorms, it was a four-person game. You would have two guys in the field with the ball, and one guy batting and running, and so he would take the golf club and be waiting for this red cherry ball that could fit in the palm of your hand to get rolled down the hall to him by the other team. So they would roll it down to him and he would try and hit it as hard as he could and while the ball was going he would have to try and sprint past these two guys, and run to the other door on the other end of Helaman Halls, floor 3100, if you're interested, Meryl Hall. You can probably still see the dents because what you would\rhave to do is sprint down the hall and touch the door before they picked up the ball and hit you with it as you were trying to run. This ball was very painful, but not quite as painful as sprinting full speed into a wooden door and its metal handle, because you're sprinting and just stopping into this wall, you had to be willing to sacrifice your body to succeed in the game that shall not be named." (Laughter)
