Brent is a student at the University of Utah. He has grown up his whole life in the LDS religion. He spent two years serving an LDS mission in Lima, Peru. Both of his parents have been members of the LDS church their whole life. Brent has grown up hearing Mormon folklore his whole life.
-
Brent has been my roommate for 2 months. I had returned from studying around 8:45 pm, and I asked if he wanted to split a pizza with me. On our walk to the local pizzeria, I began talking to him about my Intro to Folklore class. He seemed interested in what folklore was, so I began to tell him a story my friend had told me. After explaining to him the characteristics of folklore, I asked him if he had any stories he could tell me. He told me a story about the disappearing Three Nephites, so I asked if I record his response.

The members of the LDS widely revere a book entitled The Book of Mormon as\ranother source of scripture. In this book, an ancient Native American society called the Nephites, who were strict in following the teachings of Jesus Christ. The belief is that after Christ died on the cross, he appeared to the Nephite nation. In doing so, he called and sustained 12 men as apostles of the Lord, and in doing so, Christ gave three of the Nephites the ability to have everlasting life. The belief is that these three Nephites travel the Earth and providing warnings to innocent by standards. Often times, these stories are associated with the random disappearance of the Three Nephites after they give their message.

I asked Brent if I could record his story, so I record his story on my iPhone and later transcribed it. Commas generally signify pauses, "…" indicate long pauses, and no "ummms" or "uhhh" were taken\rout.
