The tradition is important to my mother and to me because it\rwas passed down from her great grandparents.
-
Mom has been continuing this tradition as it was past down to her by her parents who had it passed down from her grandparents. Thanks to the personal connection she was very easy to interview and was eager to discuss some of the traditions in our family.
-
My great-grandmother lived during the Great Depression, a time of extreme economic hardship for most families in America including hers. Citrus, such as oranges, was considered a valuable treat and was given at Christmas time. My family still places oranges in our stockings at Christmas time to remember the hardships of the Depression and as a "lesson" to be grateful for the simple things.

I discussed the traditions that my family still continues to this day with\rmy mother over the phone. I transcribed her account of the retelling of how this specific tradition started in our family and why we still use it today.
