This story is one of many about this Grandma with whom my Aunt had a special connection.
-
Aunt Melanie, my Mom's older sister, is visiting Utah from Oregon, gathering with much of the extended family to attend my cousin's wedding that weekend. As a child, I always loved her stories and the exaggerated, interesting, beautiful ways she told them. I told her about the assignment and asked if she would be willing to retell some of my favorite stories, and she offered to share some stories she had collected from her great-grandmother. So after dinner she and I went into the family room and she told me the story. This story was in the context of a longer dialogue with other stories about my great-great-grandma's early life.
-
Storytelling was a defining aspect of my years growing up around extended family on my Mom's side. Aunt Melanie always told the most vivid stories. She collects and looks for new stories to tell herself. In a way she is the archivist and the one who remembers family tales, of all my aunts and uncles. So it isn't unusual that she was the repository for unique family history stories like this one.
