Meghan is a junior at Brigham Young\rUniversity. She loves film, specifically the horror genre. She plans on majoring in graphic design and working for a fashion company. Her hobbies include painting and finding new music.
-
Meghan is my roommate and was reading a magazine in her room when I asked her to tell me one of her many "scary" stories that she loves to tell. She was relaxed when telling me the story but started out slightly hesitantly, as if trying to remember all the details, but became increasingly more animated in her speaking and more intense as the story progressed. She used her hands to help describe the story.

Skin walkers are a type of mythical creature tied to Native Americans. It is believed that they are Native Americans who have power to turn into any animal they desire, giving them superhuman abilities. It is believed that they can only come out at night and do not like to be seen, therefore attack\rwhen seen.

How collected: The story was recorded on my phone then transcribed here. I edited out when she said "um" and "like". \rText: Ok, so about four years ago, my friends, my guy friends Brian and Grant went on a drive up in the American Fork canyon with a group of people. I don't know how many but it was enough to fill an entire van of people and they were going up there with the intention of seeing something spooky. They didn't know what it was in particular but when they told me this story, both of them were really hesitant in the first place because they had told it to one friend already and that friend was going to tell it to me, but she wanted me to hear it from them personally. When we asked them to, Grant refused but Brian said that he would. And Brian was like, "I just want to let you know that if I get emotional its just because it was really scary and its not something I really like to talk about. I've talked about it with a few people." And so he says that while they are up in the canyon things are going fine and everyone is just kind of fooling around and hanging out in the car and\rhaving fun. And then when they reached, because American Fork canyon is a pretty windy tight road that leads out to the mouth…so after you enter the mouth of the canyon and you go through the middle part then you reach an open area where there's Tibble Fork which is a pond and they were hoping to get out at Tibble Fork Pond and hang out around there and maybe set up a bonfire. So, they, as they were approaching the part in…the part that opens up where the pond is, they saw a black cluster of figures in front of them. And this is right before it opened up to where Tibble Fork Pond was. And so they slowed down the van a little bit and as they got closer and closer they could see that it was these large large human forms. But they were all black. And they couldn't tell what exactly what it was until they finally pulled up. I'm not sure how far away the van was from the actual thing, but Grant was driving and he said, Brian said, Brian was sitting in the passenger seat, he\rsaid he'll never forget it when they pulled up close enough, all the sudden they realized it was three figures hunched over one figure and the three figures turned and looked at the van and the three figures that looked at the van weren't human. But still had a human shape to them. And so he said that they had red glowing eyes and he said that he had never felt more cold and disturbed in his entire life and as soon as everyone figured out what it is they were looking at, which was three skin walkers hovered over a body, they couldn't tell if it was a human body or what it was, but it was eating it. So they had disturbed the feeding session that was going on. So I guess it angered whatever the figures were and they stood up and they said before they knew it they were bolting towards the car. So so unbelievably, inhumanly fast. And so Grant tried to do as many point turns as he could in the car with his van in this very very narrow pathway of canyon and he managed to turn it\raround, but by the time he turned it around, all three of the skin walkers were, had attached themselves to the van. And so he was going as fast as he possibly could, trying, with speed, to see if they would fall off. One of the figures had a machete and was chopping at the top of the car, and another one was pulling as hard as it possibly could to open up one of the car doors and break the window, and one of them managed to open the side car door with whatever he was carrying. It was some sort of weapon. So the people in the back, everyone was screaming, every person in the car was crying, even all the boys were crying. Some people were saying prayers out loud. People didn't know what was going on, and so all they knew they could do was try as hard as they could to fend off whatever creatures were on the car, so they managed to get the door shut and Grant had swerved the car enough that one of them managed to fall off. But when he fell off, he said that it wasn't even that he\rlagged at all. He fell off and still maintained the speed of the car, and they were going really really really fast. And this was the part of the canyon where it was straight at the end, where they were going really high speed and they were all keeping up with them. And they were maintaining eye contact with the car. They reached the mouth of the canyon, like the exit, and as soon as they did, they all halted and stopped running. It's because, or at least, what they told me, or they believe what it was, at American Fork canyon that is territory that they can reign, but passed that they're not allowed to. As legend has it, that's how skin walkers function. Their powers are only manifested on the territory they're allowed to manipulate.
