Katie was married just over a year ago, to a young man, Robert, from Canada. She currently resides in Orem, Utah. Katie is visited frequently by her younger sister, Elizabeth (Lizzy), the collector. Lizzy’s visits Katie to share stories to Robert of her childhood experiences with her family. Katie and Robert do not yet have any children of their own, but as a first-grade elementary school teacher, she considers her students “Her kids.†Katie is the second oldest of 14 grandchildren of her maternal grandparents, and there is a significant enough gap in age between her youngest cousins (15 years) that they sometimes seem more like nieces or nephews. Since Katie’s maternal grandmother passed away prior to the younger grandchildren being born Katie’s mother, the oldest child in her own family, often assumes a role of grandmother to Katie’s younger cousins.

One day last week, Katie, Robert, and Lizzy were in the car driving to South Jordan to visit Katie and Elizabeth's paternal grandfather. During the drive, Katie related the story of "Cassandra and the Mickey Mouse waffle." The telling of the story was the result of one of the car's occupants having just asked a question that had just been asked and answered previously. The story was yet again retold. I called Katie to relate the original story for this assignment.

To understand this story and the references made within, one needs to know that Cassandra is one of Katie's young cousins who Katie often spoils. It is also important to know that when Katie was growing up, she had a Mickey Mouse waffle iron that was frequently used on Saturday mornings. While this story was familiar to Katie, her siblings and parents, it was not familiar to her relatively new husband Robert who is\rstill getting to know Katie's family and their traditions.

I collected the data by recording my sister telling the story. The recording was then transcribed word for word with no items edited out, as to capture the real nature of the story. \r"many years ago, when our cousin was first born we doted on her continually. We always, wanted to buy her the newest thing or wondered if she had done some life event. One morning our family was eating mickey mouse waffles and um and I was sitting there talking to my dad and I said, ‘I wonder if Cassandra has ever had a mickey mouse waffle before.' And, we discussed that for a little while and then the next sibling came down the stairs and joined us for breakfast. And as they sat down, they looked at the waffles and said, ‘I wonder if Cassandra's ever had a mickey mouse waffle before,' and we started laughing. A few minutes later, the final member of the family came down and said the exact same thing, ‘I wonder if Cassandra's ever had a mickey mouse waffle before.' And we all just bust out laughing. Now any time someone in our family asks a question that's already been answered or asked in a conversation, we always respond, ‘I wonder if Cassandra has ever had a\rmickey mouse waffle before.'"
