We served and lived together as\rcompanions while serving a mission in Birmingham, Alabama.
-
Me, my companion, and the other missionaries in the apartment were winding down after a day of work and discussing our former mission president.
-
The former mission president, Richard Holzapfel, was both respected and feared by the missionaries for his imposing and powerful personality. Missionaries usually lived in apartments with pairs of other missionaries, where they would discuss various stories and legends that had long circulated the mission. This legend took place in Alabama, part of the deep south where there was a very strong Baptist presence. The Baptists were known for being anti-Mormon, which is likely why this legend was believed by most missionaries.

I collected this item mostly from memory and am writing the story how I remember it.\r\rThe story goes that a certain Baptist Church in the area was displaying LDS temple garments during their sermon for their members to view and be able to point out. President Holzapfel heard about this, and confronted the leaders of the church, politely asking them to take down the garments. When they refused, President Holzapfel "shook the dust off his feet", a common term in LDS scripture that means to curse the person or establishment the person had left. The very next day this same Baptist Church burned down.
