Social Data: This was a group\rof roommates, all of whom Hannah is comfortable speaking freely around. We're a very close group, and had been discussing rumors surrounding secrets at BYU. \rHannah is generally a very timid person, and she was in the room with Kristen, who is very assertive in speaking, so she had been waiting for her moment to speak for a while, and was growing increasingly excited about it. She started off the comments excitedly, but became less certain about her comments as her story went on, and especially froze when she was questioned about them.
-
Cultural Data: Culturally, Mormons believe in a prophet who is spoken to by God and is often told about future events. Conference is a semi-annual event where church leaders speak to the church as a whole and teach as well as conduct items of business. Women's Conference occurs a week earlier, but is specifically for the women of the church. Historically, items spoken about in excess in these conferences become nation- or worldwide topics of conversation in following months or years, and Mormons attribute this to their belief in leaders' ability to prophesy.
