Mariah is in her last semester studying Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University. She has been married to her husband Sebastian for about 6 months. They first began going on dates in the summer of 2015.

Mariah and I were roommates for 1 ½ years before she got married. A few days previous to the interview, we had been discussing how she and Sebastian started dating. I decided it needed to be recorded so I asked to have her tell the story again. We were sitting in her apartment, just her and I, when she told the story. She laughed, smiled, and teared up as she recalled the whole experience. I laughed along with her and reacted to some things, to which she would sometimes comment on. She sometimes starts a sentence and doesn't finish it, but begins saying her sentence in a different way. These instances are marked by "…".

In Mormon culture, a "Molly Mormon" is\rsomeone who obeys the rules to a T. They are perceived as the "perfect Mormon woman" – an attractive, chaste woman whose life revolves around the teachings of the church. It is sometimes looked down on because they are stereotyped overly zealous about Mormonism and seen as out-of-touch with the world around them. This may be manifest in their deceptively chipper attitude. In Mormon culture, young men and women, usually between the ages of 18 and 28, volunteer to preach the gospel for 18 months to 2 years.

How collected: My phone ran out of storage space about 6 minutes into her telling the story. Ums, uhs, and filler ands were edited out.\rText: So, Sebastian and I met from working together. We worked over the summer in Provo with kids with disabilities. He remembers the first time meet…seeing me at a group interview to get the job but I don't remember him that...then. But I remember like some of my first impressions of Sebastian were that he was kind of sarcastic, very sarcastic (laughs). I didn't quite know how to take him. He would kind of make fun of me for being a "Molly Mormon", kind of, and later admitted that he really did think I was a "Molly Mormon". So he would say, like certain things to me and he was…and now I realize that he was completely joking but I didn't know then that he was; like about my mission or about, I don't know things like that. And he's told me that he just thought that I was like, super happy like, I don't know. Like he was like, "I didn't understand why you were so happy all the time" (laughs). Anyways, so I thought he was just like this weird guy that\rkinda got on my nerves and I thought I wou…and I remember like going to work and being like it doesn't even matter what he thinks like he doesn't even know me. Then one time we were talking about a concert that we were both happening to go to in Salt Lake. A few days later, on the day of the concert, at work I asked him if he was still planning on going later with his friends. He said that they had bailed on him and so he probably wasn't. I just, like, remember thinking like hmm should I invite him? So then, and I just did, and he said he'd come if he could drive. So he picked me up and we went with one, and he drove one of my other friends as well. And we went to the concert and it was surprisingly super fun! And, we had a really good time together. I remember driving back. He bought me a shaved ice and I spilled it all over his car. Apparently he was really mad but he didn't tell me that (laughs). And he still never cleaned it, he also admitted the other day (laughs).\rI know. So bad! So it's just hiding under the mat somewhere (laughs). It's super gross. Anyways, so a few days after that… like that night I remember I like flirted with him too and I came back and I told you, Elyssa, that I was like, "What the heck am I doing flirting with Sebastian?" And I was like, "I think I kind of like him a little bit!" Then a couple days later, I was super surprised when he called and asked me out and I was kind of nervous and was like okay this is gonna be like a one-time thing ‘cause he probably just needs me for a date but he totally knows I'm not his type so, it's just gonna be a one date kind of thing (laughs). And he shows up with his gnarly man bun and man tank (laughs). And, and we all judged him super hard core (laughs). But we had a really good time. He took me canoeing, on a double-date, and gave me root-beer. Then he started asking me out, like, super regularly and it like soon dawned on me like oh he's actually interested\rthis is not just like something to do for fun. He like played the "cool guy" thing like for forever. And I…that's who I would see at work too. He'd always be like the "cool guy". But the kids would really like him and, as I started getting to know him, I realized that he was actually a really big dork and was super nerdy sometimes (laughs). And yeah! I really enjoyed dating him. We had really fun dates. Funner than any other dates I had ever been on. And yeah! Then, I remember one day before we were like boyfriend or girlfriend, he did the sweetest thing. I was… I had two jobs. My other job was working at the MTC and I was late for my shift. He was driving me in the van and I was like, "Dang it! I'm going to be late for this shift at the MTC." And he's like, "Aren't you gonna eat before you go?" ‘Cause it was like I wasn't gonna be done until pretty late at night. And I'm like, "No, it'll be okay though." So I come out and like the day\rbefore we had been talking about what our favorite foods were. And he bought me Olive Garden and cheesecake and root beer. And left them on my car. And it was the sweetest thing. But he totally shrugged it off. \r\rShe then went on to describe how she knew he wanted to become exclusive but that she was very hesitant because he was not what she ever pictured. He wasn't this "Utah Mormon" guy that she always imagined herself ending up with. But eventually she convinced herself by thinking, "there's no harm in just dating and trying."
